  Day at the Beach
700 mothers and children came with us for a fun day at the beach, including lunch, sports and prizes.

We held our second free cancer clinic for abandoned mothers.
In cooperation with our friends from the War on Cancer we offered examinations to all our mothers.
So far of those who have participated about ten per cent test positive. Uterus cancer in this poor country has become something of an epidemic. It is caused by the men not washing, a virus forms beneath their foreskin and they pass this along to their sexual partners. But in women when it enters the uterus the virus often causes cancer.

This year we observed the International Day of the Woman more quietly than our usual demonstration for woman's rights. We invited a sellect number of women to celebrate with us and to participate in small forums hosted by our doctors, social worker and psychologist.

If only our Delicias Shelter had existed when these girls needed it - We serve free meals in our comedor to children up to the age of 14. Pictured here are nine girls who sometimes eat with us.
They may not look it but they are young enough to eat for free. The reason they look older is they are child prostitutes. Each one has her own tragic tale to tell; it usually begins with repeated rape, then abortion or maternity, then abandonment: ends with drug addiction and prostitution. We are desperate to catch these girls before thay are lost and give them the protection and rehabilitating care of the Delicias Project. We already have the property and have taken the first small steps in construction, but we urgently need outside help in order to build the facility.

We honored five outstanding mothers. This year we celebrated Mother's Day with our regular mothers; a meal, entertainment, prizes, and five of them were honored as outstanding mothers.
They are the mothers whose children, though extremely poor and needing to work to help support their single parent family, yet go to school and do well in their studies. We gave them canastas filled with food stuffs, household items and school materials for the children. We did our best to hold them up as examples to the other mothers, whose children are not faring so well because they are made to work most of every day.

When WaWaWasi came to train 88 mothers to run their new nurseries for the babies of poor working mothers. Wawawasi is one of the best Government run social programs we have encountered in Peru, and therefore when the local director asked to use our facilities to train their new workers we gladly let them.
